Historic Sites

St. Peter’s AME Church: 6.2 miles

Founded in 1861, St. Peter’s still conducts two Sunday worship services, at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., as well as multiple Bible study and ministry services throughout the week. Services typically last one to two hours; visitors are always welcome.


H.L. Hunley Submarine: 9.8 miles

The H.L. Hunley made its debut in the Confederate arsenal in 1863. Though all three of its voyages ended in disaster—with three separate sinkings claiming 21 lives—on its final mission, it demonstrated the enormous potential of undersea warfare, becoming the first submerged vessel to sink an enemy ship. It was raised from the depths in 2000 and is available for tours near the Charleston Harbor.


Magnolia Plantation and Gardens: 15.9 miles

Founded in 1676, Magnolia Plantation is the oldest tourist site in the Charleston area, and the gardens, which date to 1870, are the oldest public gardens in America. Visitors are welcome 365 days a year for self-guided enjoyment or on one of eight guided tours.


Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens: 16.7 miles

Founded in 1753, Boone Plantation is one of America’s oldest working plantations. Famous as the site for several movies and television shows set in the South, the road up to the plantation is through a stunning corridor of 200-year-old live oak trees, their branches intertwining overhead.


Middleton Place: 17.2 miles

Edward Middleton moved to Charleston from the Caribbean in 1678, building a home and plantation that would house four generations of the Middleton family. Famous residents include a signer of the Declaration of Independence, an early Ambassador to Russia and a President of the South Carolina Continental Congress. Much of their lifestyle, including furniture and their silver collection, has been preserved for historic tours.



Tanger Outlet Charleston: 5.8 miles

More than 70 retailers offer brand-name clothing for a discount at the Tanger Outlets in North Charleston. The mall also includes houseware and dining retailers.



Parks & Beaches

North Charleston Wannamaker County Park: 4.8 miles

Just a short drive away, Wannamaker County Park offers a great getaway full of natural and man-made recreation. Stretching over 1,000 acres, the park includes a sprinkler play area, 2 miles of trails, an off-leash dog park, courts for multiple sports and a waterpark.


Folly Beach: 23 miles

Folly Beach is a 12-square-mile barrier island along the South Carolina coast that offers shopping, nightlife and dining as well as traditional beach activities like fishing, surfing and kayaking. The town calls itself “one of America’s last true beach towns,” offering a unique, laid-back culture to visitors.
